It did involve a little bit of hacking but it works perfectly apparently. Firstly, the Desire has a 200MB /system directory (thank you SenseUI) so it involved moving much of the /system files to /data (the Nexus One has less space allocated to the /system partition).
Also, a little custom kernel work is required, presumably for the optical mouse and extra bit of RAM, but nothing major.
What does this mean for us? Well, for the time being, Modaco will not be releasing this custom ROM as it is watermarked and therefore someone at HTC could lose his job if it was released (thank Drizzy for the last guy to leak a ROM losing his job). But he has stated that the moment he has an unwatermarked version it will be available for all those lucky Nexus users.
Furthermore, for those of us who want to pay our early termination fee purely to upgrade from a G1 to a lovely new Desire (guilty), it shows that guys like Cyanogen could release their Nexus ROMs for the Desire.
For me, being able to have a CyanogenMod ROM on my phone straight from Steve as opposed to via another developer is in absolute must. Too much time has been spent on the cmupdater for me to abandon my dev of choice.
