Discussion: Why choose Android?, Themes, and 2.1 update

In todays post both me and Ross discussed our motivations behind choosing Android, make a brief trip into the land of themes and also discuss the upcoming realise of Android 2.1....
C (2:17 AM): Today we’re going to be discussing the statement “why choose android?”
R (2:18 AM): Because its smart, sexy and a damn sight better than the competition in most ways.
(2:18 AM): Well I bought into it because it lets you customise your phone and create something that is yours.
R (2:19 AM): I bought in to it because I’m a Linux-obsessed geek.
C (2:19 AM): Ha ha true.
C (2:20 AM): Well I mean there’s the power of Android, it appeals to your average user (Me) and your "Linux-obsessed geeks" (You).
R (2:21 AM): Yeah, it’s pretty powerful... even the almost antiquated g1 still runs like silk.
C (2:22 AM): Yeah its adaptable, the hero runs smoothly and is more than powerful enough...even if it doesn't get the OTA updates as quickly as the G1.
R (2:25 AM): It'd run a whole lot smoother without Sense, can’t say I’m a fan... as for the lack of OTAs, that all sense's fault... if they didn’t have to go about updating Sense and just kept it simple like the G1 and magic then it would get OTAs around the same time.... what’s the saying .
"Keep it simple, stupid".
C (2:26 AM): Yeah but I don’t like stock it seems a little too basic for me, if you could personalise the colours and so on I think it would be nice, like a compromise between Sense and stock...Stense...Stonse...Steck...lol.
R (2:27 AM): That’s where the themers come in. If they didn’t use Sense...or if Sense was open...theming would be so much easier.
C (2:28 AM): Does a theme sit on-top of the stock or does it actually alter the code?
R (2:30 AM): Basically...the themers just alter the system files that correspond to the bits you wanna change....icons, tray button (cm has had a nice new graphic by matt_stang for a while [one of my art guys from the cmupdater ) etc....
C (2:31 AM): So it won’t slow the phone down by forcing it to run two themes stock, and custom because I had that espresso update for the 2.1 ROM I was testing and at point you could see Sense, then the Espresso would kick in and cover it up.
R (2:34 AM): Well...some themes do slow you down for whatever reason...I’m guessing not compressing images, using RGB instead of indexed etc....so the files are a bit bigger so it takes that bit more.... i haven’t done any tests really because i prefer stock... but the jury is still out apparently.
C (2:35 AM): I do think that’s one downside to android that sadly not all phone companies that run android agree with the concept of open source.
R (2:38 AM): Well...the thing is, you having a business degree will know that companies need to do something to make them stand out. For HTC its sense, for Motorola its Motoblur, for Sony it’s that weird interface which I don’t know the name of.....They sink big money in to that stuff so obviously they don’t wanna hand it out to the competition
C (2:39 AM): Yeah I agree with that but it does sort of go against the open source principle the android is based on and I'm sure you of all people with not like that.
R (2:42 AM): Yes and no. The core idea behind android is to have a free, open operating system that any manufacturer can modify and distribute to their hearts content. So instead of each company having its own operating system, or paying to use another (like Symbian), they have one system with one set of apps that should work on all phones running the OS but unlimited possible unlimited possible implementations.
C (2:43 AM): Would be nice if it was designed by users as well lol.
C (2:44 AM): Anyway one thing I think we should discuss before we finish up is the release of android 2.1 for the HTC Hero. Mid Feb I read it should be around the 14/02/2010.
R (2:47 AM): So to say "We love YOU*, happy valentine’s day" (*reference to HTCs recent ad campaign) they are giving an update? Fingers crossed it will come some time, they aren’t just gonna abandon what is still technically their flagship (most people don’t see the nexus one as an HTC flagship). Personally I’m more interested in when the graphics and camera drivers for the G1 and Magic will be released. We know the Magic will be getting 2.1 so the drivers can be taken from there since the hardware is damn near identical apart from extra ram, ROM and lack of keyboard
C (2:49 AM): Talking about 2.1 what’s 2.1 called because Google said that it was not Flan, and it’s not Froyo as that’s 2.x
R (2:52 AM): When they announced the nexus and 2.1 they said that both 2.0 and 2.1 will be Eclair for some obscure reason...maybe the difference isn’t big enough to justify it....but they did it for Cupcake/Donut without MAJOR changes between them... who knows....Google will become self aware and assimilate us in to their Skynet/Borg hybrid anyway.....BRING ON 2012
C (2:53 AM): lol maybe 2.1 was just an excuse to take their time developing ROMs for non-developer phones like the Hero lol
C (2:54 AM): Well I'm just glad that 2.x isn’t being called flan....horrible name lol bring on Gateau though lol
R (2:55 AM): And here was me hoping we could end on my prediction of the apocalypse...
